I wonder if something like that is forced on W10 users, or if they can still get those from Nvidia. I never update hardware drivers etc based on microsoft windows 7 recommendations. Just was looking for a definitive answer to forced hardware updates or not: The vid card drivers is a great example to use.
Good question, I know with my Windows 10 install, updates are there for the hardware drivers, but it allowed me to deselect them before installing the updates. Lots of people have had problems because Windows updates their Nvidia and Realtek drivers without asking. Is that option still viable? It is, but only for a certain amount of days before you cannot do so anymore without needing to purchase a new license for the old system since it has been converted in the meantime AFAIK.
I was recently told that doctors have imbedded Windows 10 computers into patients. Using wireless connections and the Internet, doctors can remotely manage pain or, in the case of those with neurological diseases, send software updates that help patients cope with their illness. Besides the fact that Doctors using Windows 10 for their practice are potentially violating HIPAA, software used by implanted devices are proprietary to that company.
I highly doubt they would put a full OS on something that small. It would also be pointless since it would have to run a program inside itself to even do anything when they could make proprietary devices chips that are designed to monitor certain things and log the information down.
Yes well, I posted it mostly as a kind of joke. Of course, medical companies write their own very specialised and dedicated software to run on more simple processors and such. I agree! It is our job to direct microsoft policy, with our wallets.
I only use my laptop occasionally when I am away from home. This weekend I spent two of my two and a half hours of computer time bogged down with windows updates. Otherwise I would delete this trash and replace it with Linux.
I will gladly pay 2. Or I may just as well delete this crap anyway. Reason number to block windows updates: I was in the middle of doing my taxes. I went to pick up some lunch. I use it at work and it needs to be on at all times. Whenever Windows Updates runs, it blue screens during installation with a memory error. It then reverts to the old version of Windows. The whole process takes approx 20 minutes to half an hour.
So, try the option at your own risk. In order to access the Windows update configuration option for local computers, you need to follow the following path after opening the Group-policy editor. Just like the previous group-policy configuration, you can disable downloading Windows 10 updates automatically using a registry hack.
But, if you have updated your PC to Windows anniversary update or later one, the method is not going to work for you. However, you can try this at your own risk. You can take full control of Windows update services using Windows command prompt.
Run Windows command prompt with administrative privilege. There are few freeware which can cancel Windows 10 from downloading Windows update. The names are as follows:. Win Update Stop by novirusthanks. Win Updates Disabler by site2unblock. Windows 10 forces users to download and install updates of Windows 10 to the operating system in the background. Clayto My advise is to avoid Windows Home completely.
Computers where Windows Home is preinstalled are usually consumer grade quality and thus build-quality is substantially lower, especially for laptops. Computers which have Windows Professional previously Windows Business pre-installed are usually business grade computers. Next to better build-quality they are easier for maintenance, e. Business grade computers often can be opened with less or without tools, and especially on laptops one needs to remove less components to reach the memory slotss, storage bays or defective components.
Clayto August 21, PM. At least you do mention GPEditor is not by default available in Home. My only attempt to install and use it years ago ended in a mess. Remember to update on a regular basis, at a time of your own choosing.
Forced updates with no explanation of what they are or do. It’s really aggravating to hear all the defenses of Win10’s update policy in discussions, including some right here on SW.
It’s not about «best practice» or the PC anti-vax equivalent of the herd-immunity argument. The fact is that a PC is personal or corporate property, and unless we’re talking about boxes on the Microsoft campus or in Steve Ballmer’s house, a PC is property of someone other than Microsoft.
They do not have the right to unilaterally decide for me or anyone that that person’s PC should be updated on any schedule other than what that person wants. Setting updates to Automatic by default is fine. Setting reboots to automatic is fine. There’s nothing wrong with any of these provided the user has the final say on what happens. Taking away the option to say «No, not now, not ever» is crossing the line. Maybe it’s a bad idea. Maybe it opens the user up to hacks, sploits and pwnage.
Maybe it makes Baby Spice Jesus cry. Doesn’t matter – it’s still the end user’s read: property owner’s decision. Maybe it’ll be allowed to run in a VM with no network access, or limited network access to whitelisted IPs, but I don’t ever see that OS running on bare metal on any of my systems. My windows 10 test VM knew I was looking at this how-to, because it decided to do the «I’m rebooting anyway» on me, took 1.
Windows 10 is a vindictive OS. I’m done with Windows 10 on a personal basis, I am just changing windows stuff to Linux, thinking about buying my first Mac which if you knew me you would know that the rumors are true.
Fortunately, at work the powers that be want to stay with 7 for a while, works for me.
