Agisoft Photoscan is a structure from motion application. It comes in two editions, standard and professional. The primary difference between the two is that the professional edition allows for Geo-referencing using the metadata from the pictures. If you are interested in making topographical maps or large scale models of cities or sites, the Professional version will be necessary. Otherwise, the standard version should suffice.

Either version is available for a free month long trial. The program is RAM heavy. The minimum usable RAM is 4GB, but for processing large batches of photos, this will prove very slow. In addition to the pane that shows the model in progress or the photo being masked there are two other panes. Along the bottom you see the Photo pane, and along the left side you see the Workspace pane. There is also a console pane which gives text information on the processes being run. The panes can be moved by clicking and dragging if you want to customize your view.

I most often use the configuration seen in the picture, though I often close the console pane if I’m only working with one set, or chunk, of photos. Chunks are separate sets of photos that can be merged after going through the entire workflow in each set.

You might use separate chunks to speed up the modelling time by processing smaller sets of photos at one time. For smaller models that you want to get from all angles, you can get one or more chunks with the object upright, then one or more chunks with the object upside down. These can be easily merged. If you do some cleanup between the Align Photos and Build Dense Cloud steps the quality of the final model can be improved drastically.

You begin by adding pictures, either singly or by folder. Which take us to the first step towards a good Structure from Motion scene or model: getting usable pictures. Getting Usable Pictures. Build Mesh and Texture.

Aligning and Merging Chunks. Agisoft Photoscan Introduction to Photoscan: Agisoft Photoscan is a structure from motion application. Captured with Agisoft Photoscan.

The model above was captured with Agisoft Photoscan using approximately 60 photographs.
